Jay White2008-04-09T08:56:25.273-05:00Gain by Giving: How to Live A Good Life

<h7 class="write">Written on 4/09/2008 by Shelly DeVous.</h7>

Rick Warren, author of “The Purpose-Driven Life,” says we can all live A Good Life. But how? For many, living a good life seems like a dream…like Dorothy standing in the poppy field gazing at the castle of Oz far off in the distance. We view it as something we will eventually attain like a dream of a magical place; not something possible today. If that is your perception of living A Good Life, you may never attain it.

A Good Life is not a destination. It is not far off in your future.

Living A Good Life is not doing ten things you hate doing today so you eventually achieve something good in the future. The good life is not about goals or dreams.

As long as you view the attainment of A Good Life as a future phenomenon you will never attain it. That is what A Good Life is not. So, what is it?

A Good Life is:

Real —many, many people experience A Good Life everyday

Attainable —it is within everyone’s grasp, everyday

Immediate —it is possible today and everyday of your life

Life-changing —once you experience the benefits of A Good Life everyday will be fulfilling

Let’s approach the definition and attainment of A Good Life by answering the questions Who? What? Where? When and How?

Who? Only you can define how you will live A Good Life. No one else can describe your good life, but you. What matters to you, what you feel is important, what makes you unique is only defined by you.

What? What is A Good Life? It is the life you live by sharing your unique gifts in a way that enriches you and those around you. A Good Life is not about money, wealth, prestige or power. If that is how you are defining your good life, you are on the wrong track…A Good Life will remain a distant phenomenon. A Good Life is much more personal and much “closer to home.”

Where? A Good Life is everywhere you go in everything you do. It permeates every conversation, relationship, and encounter from your home life to the stranger on the street. A Good Life is everywhere.

When? All the time. Notice, everyday is included in each of the above qualities of A Good Life. Daily is when and how you live A Good Life. What you do today dictates how you feel today. It may also influence how you feel tomorrow, but there are no guarantees for that. Only today can you absolutely impact how you feel and act today.

HOW? The $64,000 question…Rick Warren states, “The good life is about being good and doing good…giving your life away.”

You may think his definition means you have to become a “do-gooder.” That is not what he means. His definition of “being good and doing good” has more to do with you being true to yourself and others than adopting “do-gooder” behavior. The real clue to attaining and living A Good Life is his last line”…giving your life away.”

Consider this question: What do we all possess that we all value?

The answer: Our unique selves.

In this booming age of blogs and Web 2.0, individual ideas and opinions reign supreme. We all want to know what the other has to say…what opinions others express, reviews of products, new ways to apply technology. We want to know what web sites others feel are important or interesting. We place high value on others’ opinions even when the others are strangers. Exchanging ideas and opinions is an expression of our true selves. Each of us brings a different perspective, a new thought, or a unique challenge. All of us learn from what others express. We place high value on the uniqueness of others.

Why? Simple.

We are all most unique when we express our opinions.

We are all most truthful when we express our opinions.

We are all most altruistic when we express our opinions.

Sharing our unique, honest expressions with complete strangers so others can gain from our wisdom and experience is “giving your life away.” It is altruistically sharing your unique gifts with others….”being good and doing good,” by giving it away.

Rick Warren also states, “Your value is not based on your valuables.” Your value is based on who you are; the unique you who possesses unique talents. Only when we give our unique value away do we attain what is most valuable…A Good Life. The purpose of our unique value is not to hoard it, but to share it, and only in sharing it will we feel valued. Here are six simple things you can share that will help you live A Good Life:

Your thoughts, ideas, opinions

Your experience—show others what you can do for them

Your smile; your enthusiasm, your willingness

Your touch—give a pat on the back...shake a hand…show affection

Your time---a few minutes, an hour, or a day devoted to another

Your talent---share your creativity, your mechanical ability, your technical skills

How do you live A Good Life?
Everyday, share what is unique about you. Kindly, generously, share your opinions and ideas. Be truthful, honest and willing. Smile and be optimistic about your gifts. Give of yourself so others can gain. Do it everyday, with every encounter. At the end of the day, reflect on what you did and what made you feel the best about yourself. That will be your clue about what you do and how you live tomorrow. Enriching another’s life with your unique gift is living A Good Life…however and wherever that manifests itself.

“Significance in life comes from giving it away,” Rick Warren guides us to the path of living A Good Life.

What makes you significant? Answer that question…then give it away, everyday. Then, you will be living A Good Life.

-Shelly

7 Simple Ways To Burst Out of Bed Each Morning

<h7 class="write">Written on 4/08/2008 by Alex Shalman, creator of the Practical Personal Development blog.</h7>

Way before the sun peeks over the horizon, a few chosen people awaken from their slumber and dive head first into their day. These chosen few accomplish a ton before the rest of us would ever consider rising from our nice warm beds.

Who are these juggernauts that have command over the morning hours?

In theory, your productivity level shouldn't differ if you rise at 4am or 11am. What matters is the quality of sleep that's giving your mind and body sufficient time to recover.

These early rising juggernauts, these unstoppable agents of productivity, they see things differently. They see these early hours as their chance to lay claim to their share of the day. They rise with purpose, act with determination, and achieve ruthlessly.

The sun has not caught me in bed in fifty years. - Thomas Jefferson

The world is in awe of these special people, so let's take a look at what pops them out of bed like a toaster strudel and what gets them up, sometimes before the alarm!

Appointment With Waking: The harsh truth about the human body is that we're creatures of habit. In some ways this can be extremely inconvenient when trying to take on new things. However, if we allow ourselves to live within the rules of our body's natural cycle, which is a 24-hour circadian rhythm, we will be pleased with the body's functionality.

This means that when you find a waking hour that will work best for you each day of the week, you should stick to it. This will allow your body to want to support you in your endeavor of waking up, and rise you out of bed feeling fresh as a daisy.

The King and The Pauper Way Of Eating: The way our bodies function optimally is if we eat like a king in the morning and a pauper in the evening. This means that it's best to eat heavier, bigger portions in the morning because these meals will give us high energy throughout the day and then burn off.

Eating like a pauper, meaning small light meals, in the evening allows us to go to sleep on an empty stomach. If your body is functioning normally, and you don't have stomach ulcers, going to sleep on a mostly empty stomach will allow you to sleep better. This nightly fast allows your body to take it's focus away from digestion and put it towards repair and rejuvenation of the body's cells.

Living With Purpose: Young children will do anything to avoid going to sleep at night. These same children are also the ones that can't wait to get out of bed first thing in the world. The simple reason for this non-lazy behavior is that they don't want to miss a thing.

As adults we may need more persuasion than 'not wanting to miss a thing'. This is why we take extra steps in creating fun, life changing goals, and scheduling specific ways of how we'll get a step closer to these goals during this coming day. What we all need is not necessary a cause we're willing to die for, but at least a cause we're willing to LIVE for.

Plan Your Day: We can say we're going to live with purpose, but unless we plan, we can tell ourselves that we'll start living with purpose next week, or the week after that. Planning is one of the fundamental ways to maximize your mind to achieve your goals, and as such it plays a critical role in allowing us to have an awesome day, everyday. We need not do more than take 15 minutes the night before to succinctly organize the next days schedule.

A schedule complete with waking time, most important things of the day, eating and recreational allowances. Having a tight schedule allows me to live out my day with definitive purpose, while getting more done, having more fun, and not wasting precious moments of my life.

“Happy people plan actions, they don't plan results” - Dennis Wholey

The Water Hack: A bit of water before bed and half a liter as soon as you get up. The water before bed will serve in the rejuvenation process we mentioned above. While you sleep all your cells will fill up with this fresh water and create an over all well being within your body.

The water in the morning does two things. One is it provides your first dose of water to get your mind and body going. Another function, as told to me by my endocrinology teacher (a very qualified person to say this), is that a dose of water in the morning triggers a cascade of physiological functions that engages your digestive system and causes you to excrete feces. You'll feel nice and light first thing in the morning!

Work That Body: In number 1 above I mentioned that our bodies adapt around a 24-hour circadian rhythm. This works for sleep, eating, exercise, and many other bodily functions. We're a pretty efficient physiological machine when you think about it. This is why getting a dose of exercise is optimal in the morning. It gets the blood flowing and stimulates you to function on a higher level.

"Those who think they have not time for bodily exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness." - Edward Stanley

Once you're used to this routine, your body will prepare by providing you with high energy before you start to work out. As you can see, if you wake up with this high energy, you're going to just pop out of bed.

Have 'Me' Time: No morning is completely satisfying unless you've scheduled in some 'Me' time. Whether you enjoy meditating to clear you mind and give you laser sharp focus, or reading to gain some new knowledge about the world, make sure you schedule in this time.

There may very a variety of things you enjoy doing, so this will be custom tailored to the individual. The point is that when you have something you REALLY enjoy doing right when you get up, you won't be able to wait until that alarm goes off till you jump out of bed and get to it!

See, that's all it takes! Try it for a couple weeks, get used to it, and soon you'll be relishing sunrises like this:

- Alex

How Misguided Motivation Can Prevent You from Achieving Excellence

<h7 class="write">Written on 4/08/2008 by Kevin Geary, author of Change Your Tree.</h7>

I’m a martial arts studio owner and instructor by trade. My profession allows me to teach and interact with all ages, races, religions, and both sexes. Even though all of these people are completely different, they share the same common goal; earning their black belt.

On another level, as a business owner, I get to network with many other business owners. Again, though all of these people are different and trying to make a living in different industries, many of them share the same common goal; more sales.

For school children it’s grades, for employees it’s a raise, for television it’s ratings, and the list goes on. While all of these people are motivated, only a small percentage of them succeed to the level of excellence (or at all). Why? They are plagued with having the wrong type of motivation. Their motivation, in fact, is preventing them from truly achieving. For some, the motivation can actually cause them to fail.

Children in the martial arts really get wrapped up in the belt system. Everything they do is about getting that next belt. Of course, that’s why the belt system was invented. But I always challenge my students with the idea that motivation should be based only on self-improvement, not on things or ideas.

I ask my students the following question; “What would you do if we stopped awarding belts? Would you still come to class?” In other words, “what’s your motivation for doing this?” I think this is a question we should all ask ourselves in regards to many different things we do in our lives.

My best students don’t care about belts. Instead of being motivated by things or ideas, they’re simply motivated by their desire to be better. They want to be faster, they want to be stronger, and they want to be smarter. Their motivation is based on self.

When you are motivated by things, ideas, the future, or other goals, your success is dependent on those things. If students don’t get belts every so often, they drop out. If children don’t get good grades, they get discouraged, and if employees don’t get a raise they get angry or resentful.

The true reason for these people’s failures is misguided motivation. If you are motivated by a desire to improve yourself or to help others, you will achieve. It’s that simple. Martial arts students who strive to better themselves always reach black belt because their motivation is real. Business owners who strive to better themselves and their business make more sales because their motivation is real. School children who want to learn for the sake of gaining knowledge get good grades because their motivation is real.

Whenever you have a goal, ask yourself what your motivation to achieve that goal is based on. Are you motivated by some reward? Does your motivation rely on someone else? Are you motivated by anything other than a desire for self-improvement or to help others? That’s the million dollar question.

The only real motivation in life comes from the desire we just discussed. All other motivation is simply an illusion, and a dangerous illusion at that.

Let’s think for a minute about self-based motivation vs. object-based motivation. If you are motivated by a desire to improve yourself, you will always be accomplishing—it will be an ongoing process. On the other hand, if you are motivated by a single reward, thing, idea, etc. you may achieve that thing, but unknowingly forsake all others in the process, including yourself. We see this in people who do the minimum required to be rewarded.

Those who are motivated by a desire to improve themselves never accept the minimum because that directly translates to being the minimum. Those who are motivated by objects or ideas can afford to do the minimum because they are happy as long as they meet whatever goal they set out for, regardless of how real that achievement is. This is simply one example, one consequence of misguided motivation.

In the last paragraph I made a statement that many of you probably read over without realizing its depth. I said, “…you may achieve that thing, but unknowingly forsake all others in the process, including yourself.” That’s powerful. What do I mean by “forsaking all others, including yourself?” If you are motivated by something other than a desire to improve yourself or to help others, you may still achieve, but at what cost?

If my goal in business is to increase sales, I can do that in many different ways. I can spend more on marketing, I can gain publicity, or I can scam people. I can increase sales both morally and immorally. I can increase sales while destroying myself in the process. That is the power of misguided motivation.

If instead, I’m motivated simply by a desire to serve my customers and be the best businessman I can be, I will always reach my goals and do so in a healthy manner.

If you want to achieve excellence in everything you do, take a deep look at what motivates you and make sure your motivation is centered only on your desire to improve yourself or to help others; that’s the key to excellence.

-Kevin

Learn How to Cook and Prep Healthy Meals at Home

Four months ago I started making a concentrated effort to eat healthier; I mean very concentrated. Out of my diet are all of those enriched flours, saturated fats, sugars, etc. While it is going great, I've encountered an unexpected, but obvious problem; I have very few skills in the kitchen.

The lazy way out won't work here my friends; you can't consistently purchase healthy food at a restaurant. Sure, you can get their house salad (dry, oil on the side) but aside from that, I have a hard time believing that the food is made with your health in mind. Therefore, in order to really get moving on a healthy lifestyle, you have to prep yourself and your kitchen. This is something I failed to do. I knew the freezer held the peanut butter and chocolate ice cream and I knew the microwave would heat my Hot Pockets. Aside from that, I was a helpless fool in the kitchen.

In typical fashion, I found some resources that I now constantly refer to. While it's only been four months since the big diet change, I have learned a ton from these sites. In fact, each of these are bookmarked on the laptop I have in the kitchen.

I am actually hoping that you all leave some good tips in the comment section so we can learn this one together. In the meantime, here's to good cooking!

45 Cooking & Baking Tips - A Collection Of Timeless Wisdom : There are some unhealthy items here but very cool tips nonetheless.
