Google Docs Vs Live Office
Tug-of-war!
Google Docs Vs Microsoft Office Live Workspace
Take a look at the below screenshots,
Google Docs
Microsoft Office Live Workspace
Both are alike!
Some cool features that is missing in Google Docs,
You can install add-in for Office XP, 2003 and 2007 – through which you can access online documents with Microsoft Office.
You can upload almost all type of files (including images, documents, excel-sheets and many)
One big feature is currently not available in Live - you can only view the uploaded files but you can’t edit them. If you want to edit, you need to use the appropriate software. Hope they will include this feature very soon.
But I have a strong opinion that Live will not allow users to edit the uploaded document as it will affect their software business ;)
Google or Microsoft? The tug-of-war continues...
What is your choice? Cast your vote!

Google Analytics Vs Piwik
Most of them know about
Google analytics
. For those who don’t know “Google analytics is a free website tracker from Google”. Using Google analytics you can track your visitors and other related details.
Piwik
is something similar to Google analytics but it is open source.
Piwik aims to be an open source alternative to Google Analytics.
– From Piwik.org website.
Is it possible for Piwik to overtake Google Analytics? What is your thought? I don’t think it can! Because I have the following reasons,
1. Installing Piwik is not as easy as Google analytics and requires programming knowledge
2. Statistics is stored in our server which will consume bandwidth and space
Google Analytics or Piwik? What you recommend? Add your comments!

Google Chatback - Chat With Me Now!
I have added the
Google's chatback badge
to my blog. You can chat with me whenever my status is "Available".
How it works?
Someone clicks the
chatback
badge.
You will get a alert in your Gtalk, after you accept the chat, you will get the following alert in your browser,
After you click "Launch Chat", you will get the below window,
On the same time, the guest (visitor) will have the below window,
In the above window you can see the last line "Pratheep is typing..."
This is cool! but the chat is not as fast as the regular Gtalk. I believe that Google will enhance this service soon with some cool features.
Still waiting? Create your own
chatback badge
and Start chatting with your visitors!
No need to fill anything, just sign-in with your
google account here
, copy the code, past and start using the chat facility.

Google Alerts - Spammers Attack
Recently I got a Google alert as shown in the below screen shot. If you carefully watch the screenshot, it is different from the regular alert. Compare with the 2nd image (it is the screenshot of a regular Google alert).
This alert is no where related to the alert’s topic
Different language other than English

Google Update and Other Interesting Stuffs
Let me start with the recent Google update:
#1
Google Toolbar 5 Beta for IE
Download and install the all new Google toolbar for IE. Check this video explaining some of the important stuffs.
I know most of the webmaster use Google reader to update themselves through many websites. But most of them don’t know that there are many shortcuts to use the Google reader effectively through the keyboard. If you are a expert in using computers, they you will not prefer to use mouse for most of the time, so why are you waiting for, just open your Google reader and type “?” without quotes. You will get the complete list of shortcuts for Google reader. Type “?” and learn more!
What is this? Google Apps is already used by many small enterprises! So what’s new in it?
The answer is: to use Google Apps (regular version), you need to verify that you are the webmaster/owner for the website for which you are configuring. But Google apps for team is different, here you no need to verify your website, instead you verify your corporate email address and add your corporate friends, then you can use all the services like, Google docs, calendar and other cool stuffs including GTalk. Don’t wait, just login and sign-up. To use the Gmail service, you need to change the mx-record in the server.
This is a perfect update. Throw the hardcopies, go with softcopies. If you want to know news about your local area, just type your City, Sate or Zip code. It is beautifully working for my local place. Try yours. The news updates are very frequent and for that reason you the very recent news.
Search engine giant and Mobile giant have joined their hands! This is really interesting and trouble for their competitors in both the search engine and mobile industry. Nokia has announced that in all the new product releases, Google search will be integrated. So Nokia mobile user can now enjoy the benefits from Google. In the other end, yahoo and t-mobiles have teamed up and decided to release mobiles with yahoo search enabled by default.
So, competition is picking up, let’s wait for the result!
I have a doubt, Android is on the way to market, this will massively affect Nokia market. But this partnership is going to work? Any comments!
Previously when you search for any local place in Google like “
hotels in London
”, you will get 3 local results on the top of the page, but now they displaying 10 results with a map image marking all the locations. This is really cool! Take a look at it now:
#8: Google Logo
Last but not least, as usual, Google has released their logo for Valentine’s Day, check out this cool stuff.
Also, Google has posted a competition. Check it out
here
:
Check this cool new tool which works perfectly in Firefox browser and partially work in other browser. You can extract a huge report on the linking structure of your website with other useful information.
Before you start, download and install the Firefox plug-in.
Do Google crawl your website frequently? Do you want to monitor it? Check this tool and get more benefit out of it. You can even put the crawling graph in your website to showcase it your visitors.
Enter your URL and start monitoring.
#3: CSS Update
This is something cool, but not SEO related.
Check
this website
; you can actually hide an image behind text. I tried and it is working fine. Playing with CSS3. Works only with Firefox and Safari web browsers!
#4: The Future of Mobile
Check this, stuff!
See-through, Click-Find, and know more!
This will be our future mantra. So confused?
Check this
, you will understand.
The search engines which we have right-now will search for text that we type in the text box. Have you ever wondered about a search engine where it can get an image as an input and display results (both image and website) related to that image. I thought about it and now it is live.
Microsoft is testing their beta version of the search engine.
Check it
. It will work only in IE6+
This is not yet released; it is still in testing phase.

Stay with Current Update While Travelling
I faced a big problem when I travelled to my native place for more than 10 days. Because I didn’t get time to sit and login the system to read the updates. I was doing a research on how to stay updated on the go. Recently I read a post from a BlogSpot user about using the RSS feed effectively. Here are some websites through which you can get benefited.
1. Very first tip is, download a RSS reader to your mobile, the best way to do it, is to install
Opera Mini
. This is said to be one of the best browser for mobile. Through opera you can add all the RSS feed and update yourself through it.
2. If you travelling to a place where there is no internet, you can convert the RSS as an offline version and upload it to your laptop and read it on the go. Use this website to convert RSS to PDF, rss2pdf.com.
3. For people who don’t have access to internet in their mobile can use this website to read the RSS (basically the update) through text messages. Visit this website to know more about it, zaptxt.com.
Found it useful? Try it and don’t miss any of the important updates.

Embed Slide-shows in Website, like Google Videos
From the beginning of New Year, Google started to launch new ideas. As the very first step, they have launched the embedded option for the slides we create through
Google Docs
(Google Presentation). From now, you can put all your details as a beautiful slide-show and present it to your website viewers. Take a look at my “Welcome 2008” slide :)
I have a question!
Is the content included inside the presentation index-able by search engines (especially by Google Bot)? Let’s wait for the Google experts' reply!

Webmaster Tool Update
Google has updated the
webmaster tool
. Please take a look at the below screen-shot,
Under "Diagnostics" menu, they have added a new sub-menu, "Content Analysis". In this section they track all the issues in the website related to title, meta tags and non-indexable content.
The tool helps to do a proper on-page optimization for the websites. It analyses title and meta tags and generate a report for all repeated, short and missing tags. Also, it analysis the website content and display the reason for non-indexable content. Using these reports we can fix the SEO tags and content for the website.
Sing-in
to get the benefits from Google Webmaster Tool. Still the developers were working on this tool and they will add more cool stuff in the coming year, 2008. Check the webmaster tool frequently to get the update.
Also there is an update in Google Analytics (this is again a free tool from Google where you can measure your website’s traffic for free). Now, we can compare results which will be displayed as a graph. For example, you can compare "Page Views" with "Traffic (Visits)" and generate a graph to analysis it.
to get the updates! Note: This is still in beta testing mode and will be live very soon.

Stop Buying / Selling Links for PR and SE Rankings - Google
The recent PR update is very clear in pulling-out the PR of websites which is getting money and passing PR. As per the new
webmaster guidelines
, Google is telling that selling links and passing your PR for SE rankings is not recommended and not legal. So webmasters, please do not sell links and get caught by Google.
So, if any one is able to find such websites, please help Google to find the illegal website.
to register a complaint about link selling website.
Please note, you can always put ads / sponsored links in your website, but add a "nofollow" tag or add a intermediate page which will redirect to destination page. But this redirection should be blocked for search engines, you can use robots.txt to do this.

Windows Live Writer Help for Google Blogger
Recently
Microsoft
has released software which supports few Google products. Among that software I like “Windows Live Mail” and “Windows Live Writer”.
You can get the LIVE software package from Microsoft at
http://get.live.com/wl/desktop
This particular posting is for those who is trying to use the “Live Writer” to edit the “
Google Blogger
”. Some of them have tried and started commenting that Live Writer is NOT working for Blogger. Yes this is true, but this particular post will help you to setup “Windows Live Writer” for “Google’s Blogger”.
Please follow the steps carefully and you can get your Blogger running in Live Writer :)
Step1:
Download and install “Windows Live Writer” at
http://get.live.com/writer/overview
Step2:
After installing, open it from the installed programs list and you will get the following screen,
And then the following screen,
After you get this, select the third option i.e. “Another weblog service”, and click next.
Step3:
In the above screen, fill the details as shown above. But you should enter your user name and password for Blogger, just kidding ;)
Click next,
Step4:
Live Writer will try to configure your Blogger account, but unfortunately it can’t...
You will get the following screen,
Now select the “Weblog Service Provider” as “Blogger”
As soon as you select the server provider you will get the following URL in the remote posting URL field,
http://www.blogger.com/feeds/
<feed-id>
/posts/full
Note:
please take a look at the steps very carefully.
Now, open your Blogger's profile in a browser, the URL will be something like this,
http://www.blogger.com/profile/19941753007615453754
Copy only the numbers from the URL (i.e. in the above URL I will copy “19941753007615453754”) and replace <feed-id> in the remote posting URL field and click next.
Note:
Please make sure that you have not edited the entire URL except replacing <feed-id>.
You will get the following screen; this screen will take some time, because it will download your complete Blogger setting to your local computer.
Click next,
Step5:
(Final)
Click "Finish"
Hurray! You have configured your Blogger to “Windows Live Writer”.
Note:
this particular posting was published through the “Live Writer”
I can recommend this software, as this is very easy to use. Some of its positive points are,
1. You will actually type in Blogger interface and not in a regular Blogger editor
2. Instant preview, even you don’t need Internet to preview it
3. Formatting is as simple as you do in MS Word
4. Spell Check before publishing
5. Save and publish when you are connected to Internet
6. Synchronize with online Blogger whenever required
7. Add nofollow tag and target window for links very easily
So, what else you are looking for, just start posting into Blogger through Live Writer.
Thanks to Microsoft for this tool!

Matt Cutts Reply and Google Recommendation for 503 Service Unavailable
I got a reply from Google’s Matt Cutts for one of my
questions regarding Google Reader
, which I posted in his blog. This is the second reply that I am getting from him. Check the screenshot below. He is also interested to have a filter system to filter feeds with some restrictions in Google Reader.
503 Service Unavailable – Recommended by Google
There is a discussion going on in SE Round Table regarding the long down-time for a website, as per the discussion, please use "503 Server Response" to tell Google Bot that your website not completely down and will be available after some time, even you can specify an approximate time, so that Google Bot can revisit your website after the specified time.
Quite interesting feature from Google, isn’t?

Google Webmaster Tool - Crawl Rate Update
This is one of the
best tools from Google
; using this tool we can track some of the website's activities like, "top queries", "crawling rate", "index details", "links details" and much more.
These facilities are available from the day they launched this tool, but what is actually new in this? Before I explain, take a look at below screenshot of my Google’s Webmaster Tool admin page.
Under "Tools" menu we have an option "Set Crawl Rate", here you can actually see the Google bots activity. It will show you two main things,
1. Googlebot activity in the last 90 days
2. Your current speed
1. The activity report they will show the details of, number of pages crawled, number of kilobytes downloaded and time spent downloading a page.
The Update Is:
2. In the speed section, you will actually have three options to select your website's crawl rate by Googlebot. Usually, the "Faster" option will be in disabled mode and no one can activate it, unless if Google feels that the crawl rate is very low for your website, they will automatically enable it as shown above. The faster crawl rate will automatically expire after 90 days from the day it was activated.
In the screenshot you can actually see the note from Google, stated just below "
Faster
".
Does anyone experience the same situation? Please comment.

Google Acquires Jaiku - Activity and Presence Sharing Website
One more acquisition from Google,
Jaiku
, it is an activity and presence sharing website which works on both mobile and web. People can easily find and interact with their friends’ no-matter where they are, they can easily reach them either through mobile or through website. They provide a widget for mobiles through which they can easily interact with their friends. Also there is a mobile version of the website, through which we can share with our friends. This is also called, micro-blogging website.
Currently Jaiku is not open to register for a new account,
to send a request to the administrator for a Jaiku invitation code.
There is a huge plan from Google with the recent acquisition and you can see the result before this Christmas. I will not let the secret out. ;)

Three Recent Update from Google
In this post I wanted to discuss about the following update from Google,
1. Google Trends Update
2. Google Bookmarks Sharing
3. Google to buy Double Click
Let me start,
1. Google Trends Update:
As per the previous update from Google Trends, it was updated only once in a month and now they wanted to give more comfortable and relevant details to the public, so they have started to update the Google Trends DAILY. Yes, this is one of the best update from Google this month. This will definitely help most of the webmasters to know about the keywords activity.
Check yourself here about the update happening in Google Trends
.
2. Google Bookmarks Sharing:
Google started to enter the Social Media Network, as a result, they have introduced a new concept like Digg and Delicious, where we can post and share our bookmarks live and share with others without login.
Checkout my sharing page
, but for now I haven't added any stuff to it :)
3. Google to Buy Double Click:
Double Click
is a website which is similar to Google AdWords. Google is in the process of buying this company and they are waiting for a legal approval from European Union Commission. Hope they will get a positive response from them and acquire this as soon as possible.
Hope there will be a huge update on GMail, wait for the update to be published on my blog.

Good Docs with Google Presentation
The hottest news as of today is the release of Google’s Presentation. It was said sometime before that Google will get all the office products online and it is true, it is happening now. Those who use
Google Docs and Spread Sheet
please login to your account and check for this wonderful update now. Don’t worry even if you don’t have a login,
just sign-up here
.
Now you have all of your big office application online, no need to carry any CD or other material with you when you go for a presentation, also it is not required that you need to arrange for a meeting to show your presentation. Do you think how? Very simple, just create a presentation in Google docs and add members to that presentation and just show them slide-by-slide and explain what you are trying to say.
So what are the other benefits...?
Instead of my answer for this question, just take a look at the below video from Google,
All the 3 major office products are online, I can’t guess what would be Google next product? Any idea? Fingers crossed, and waiting for Google to reply...

How to Create Folders in GMail Web Interface
Everyone know that
GMail
is one of the best solution for processing emails, especially emails with high attachment (GMail now supports 20 MB of attachment). But most of them complaint about one many drawback in its online interface, yes, we can’t create folders in GMail. But after a small research with GMail, I managed to find a solution of this problem.
I don’t know whether you know about this, but I just wanted to share this information with everyone.
Here is the actual solution:
First create labels as per your requirement
Next, select the email(s) that you want to transfer to a folder
After selecting it, apply the label that you want
After that “archive” it
That’s all! Your emails will be now segregated into folders :) navigate to each end every label, as if you are using folders.
Hope this small piece of information will help, but the easiest way it to configure it to outlook or outlook express or any email client and segregate it to folders… ;)

Web 3.0 Definitions from Google Eric
I was doing a little research on the new topic that was discussed widely in many forums and blogs. Yes it is Web 3.0.
What is Web 3.0, is that an extension of Web 2.0? Or is that something new… this new topic confused everybody and no one is having a clear idea about it. But Google’s Eric is able to give a definition for this new term. Take a look at the video of Eric from Google; he is explaining what Web 3.0 is, and how it may work in the future also how it will spread. Look it is quite interesting and may cause a new evolution in the internet world. Let us always hope for the best. Watch the video and get some good information.

Google Toolbar for Opera
I heard news that
Google
is creating a toolbar for
Opera Internet Browser
. Is that true? Some of them are telling that it is a rumour and some of them are telling that is true. Can any one from Google reply to this question? After hearing this news I installed opera and there is no toolbar available for it, so I am not comfortable with it, because I need to see PR and other features like bookmarks, etc. Hope I will get a reply from Google soon, but we can install only the Google search bar in Opera.

Google Analytics Update
Google has started to update
Google Analytics
(a free online tool from Google to measure the website traffic for free). As a beginning, they did changes in look of the report displayed and now they have started to tweak all the inner report modules.
They have stared with the "Map Overlay". Previously in the first step, they show only the main continents and after when you zoom into the places, you can get the exact count from each place. Now in the very first step of "Map Overlay", they have added most of the big cities and countries. Just mouse-over it and you can get the exact traffic details from that place (state/country/continent).
Take a look at the below image,

Meta Tag from Google
What are Meta tags?
These are the tags that will be available in the head section of the website. This mainly helps the search engines to find what kind of website is this and much other useful information is inserted into it.
New Meta From Google:
Now you can inform Google about a expiry data of a page. The new meta tag is “unavailable_after”. This information is not released officially and we are waiting for it.
Using this meta tag, you can tell the search engines from which date they should stop crawling the page. Hope this is a useful meta tag.
