Another Reason Google's Business Model Is Brilliant

There was widespread discussion in the blogosphere about the rate of growth of paid clicks beginning to fall off at Google (GOOG). This was a major factor driving the stock's price lower.

After the close yesterday, Google reported profits increased 30% and revenue moved up 46% to $3.7 billion. The company reported net income of $1.31 billion, or $4.12 a share, compared with $1 billion, or $3.18 a share, a year earlier. (See transcript.) The EPS figure was well above analyst estimates.

U.S. Dollar Rallies On U.S. Corporate Earnings

Just Thursday, the US dollar was the weaker opponent, but things changed swiftly on Friday for the currency. The US dollar rose more than 200 pips against the Japanese yen, hitting an intraday high of 104.70, following the strong rally in US stocks which reacted positively to earnings results by Google. EUR/USD, which hit an all-time high of 1.5985 just yesterday, bounced more than 270 pips down from that level and is now trading in the 1.5700s. Traders closing out their Euro long positions have also pulled down EUR/GBP, and the British pound has been a strong performer on Friday.

Overstock's Q1 Spin Hides Some Worrying News

The fascinating corporate basket case Overstock.com (OSTK), and its dipsy doodle CEO Patrick Byrne, have engaged in a flurry of activity in recent days. Byrne has been doing stuff that didn't seem quite rational -- like moving the Antisocialmedia.net corporate smear site to the Overstock website.

Now we know why: Overstock is the target of yet another investigation, this one a grave criminal probe by not one but five counties in northern California. That's on top of the active probe of its accounting that has been slowly chugging away by the SEC for the past two years.

This calamitous news is buried in today's Overstock first quarter earnings loss press release. It is buried so far down you'd think that Byrne could have used camouflage netting if he could:

What Google's Strong Q1 Might Mean for Yahoo

Yahoo (YHOO) reports Q1 earnings on Tuesday in what should be a key moment in the company’s struggle to find an alternative to Microsoft’s (MSFT) $31-a-share takeover offer. If the numbers are good, Yahoo will have a strengthened hand in its demand that MSFT increase its bid. If the results disappoint, Microsoft’s position would be strengthened.

Last night’s strong earnings report from Google (GOOG)(see transcript) seems to have cheered investors about Yahoo’s prospects: The stock is up 40 cents at $28.43. (Or maybe it simply reflects the rise in MSFT shares - that stock is up 78 cents, or 2.7% - since every penny increase in the stock price raises the effective value of the bid.)
