A bit about me
My name is Nick. I'm in my late thirties and live in Johannesburg, South Africa. I also have a home in Jeffreys Bay and spend at least one month every year there.
I enjoy instant feedback and visual reward. Wikitravel provides exactly that by allowing me to see how the regions I am working on grows, it also allows me the opportunity to learn more about my own country as well as the rest of the world.
Countries I have visited
Humans
One of the saddest things I encounter is the way that human population growth and expansion is affecting this planet we live on.
Overpopulation, habitat destruction, the quality of the atmosphere and global warming are all real concerns that we are humans will need to address.
A wall at the Maropeng Centre in the Cradle of Humankind contains a quote by Marshall McLuhan: There are no passengers on Spaceship Earth. We are all crew.
I wish that really was the case, but unfortunately it seems that only a very small number of humans consider themselfs crew on this spaceship of ours and are willing to put in the effort and work required to improve it and keep the life support systems running. The rest seems to be either stowaways along for a free ride or pirates plundering what they can without considering the consequences.
If 6.6 Billion humans all say No to another hectare of rainforest being destroyed, then the destruction will stop.
Wikitravel work
Reminders to self
ToDo
Cape Town, improve the peninsula map and create city maps
Do maps for each province similar to the one I have done for Western Cape
Possibly create an article for Cradle of Humankind. It will qualify as an article, but I'll wait until I have more detail for it.
- Photos to take, someday when I get around to it.
- Take a weekend break and visit Royal Natal National Park, get photos of the Tugela falls and the park in general.
- Johannesburg: Nelson Mandela Bridge, Kyalami, Sentech tower, Hillbrow tower, OR Tambo, WITS and UJ, Soccer City and Ellis Park
- Carltonville: Tau Tona shaft
- Cradock: Egg Rock, Market street
