[edit] Happy New Years!
I felt like saying...between you and Gorilla Jones, you two successfully created 10 star articles this year. Congratulations! Looking forward to more in '08... PerryPlanet 22:09, 31 December 2007 (EST)
[edit] Closings
So you don't have to slog through my mass of recent edits to find them - Mas in Chicago/Wicker Park and Cafe Suron in Chicago/Rogers Park are closed, and I deleted a bar in the Chicago/Near South that had virtually no description or info beyond the address. Gorilla Jones 16:17, 5 January 2008 (EST)
- Oh, and the Uptown map still needs Spacca Napoli. Thanks! Gorilla Jones 17:44, 5 January 2008 (EST)
[edit] partial revert re Meson David
Re [1]: looks like the user's experience is radically different from the previous recommendation. Why don't we help him to incorporate the opinion / to discuss the matter in Talk? --DenisYurkin 14:30, 6 January 2008 (EST)
[edit] The welcome
Thanks Peter - I like holidays & I like Wikis - maybe I can help a bit! Cheers --Herby talk thyme 09:36, 7 January 2008 (EST)
- BTW don't know what you guys do about open proxies but both user:72.232.199.50 & user:59.77.21.250 look like open proxies to me and were placing porn links - is there an admin board or whatever? Cheers --Herby talk thyme 09:45, 7 January 2008 (EST)
[edit] Blacklist
Try (m|M)(i|I)(k|K)(e|E).*(m|M)(e|E)(t|T)(t|T)(e|E) ~ 203.144.143.4 06:38, 9 January 2008 (EST)
You might also want to add m-ikemettedefensefund\.org (without the hyphen) [2] - the above should catch it, but probably worth adding this too just in case ~ 203.144.143.4 12:40, 9 January 2008 (EST)
If you'll be around to re-protect it in 5 minutes, could you unprotect it? ~ 203.144.143.4 15:18, 9 January 2008 (EST)
- Sure. Btw, the phrase you suggested cast too broad a net. For some reason it caught up this edit. --Peter Talk 15:21, 9 January 2008 (EST)
- I think the problem was an extra blank line that crept in - I think it blacklisted every page, regardless of content. Anyway it's back in again now and everything seems to be OK. If it all goes pear-shaped, just revert the lot. Thanks. ~ 203.144.143.4 15:43, 9 January 2008 (EST)
- BTW - did you mean to delete the dtdbxd0\.cn line [3] - ?
"Penzenskaya Oblast" looks like an alternative name - how about incorporating it as Penza Oblast (Penzenskaya Oblast) is a region in... or something like that? Then if someone searches for either "Penzenskaya" or "Penzenskaya Oblast" (which I'd guess must be possible/likely as that's the name of the Wikipedia article) the Penza Oblast article will show up. ~ 203.144.143.4 01:40, 11 January 2008 (EST)
- Doesn't the redirect serve this purpose? I purposely avoided transliterations of adjectival names, since that goes against general English naming conventions. --Peter Talk 02:09, 11 January 2008 (EST)
- The redirect does help, albeit in a rather roundabout way if you "Search" as opposed to "Go". Anyway, I think it's definitely worth having some form of ultra-simple confirmation on the page that the two names do refer to the exact same place - lots of people will have absolutely no idea what an adjectival form is. But I'll leave it up to you - thanks for the explanations. ~ 203.144.143.4 02:27, 11 January 2008 (EST)
- Nice!
- Just curious - why <i> instead of '' - ? ~ 203.144.143.4 02:31, 11 January 2008 (EST)
- I don't know exactly what was going on, but I hit all sorts of awful formatting problems using the wiki markup for italics. In part, at least, because the ' is necessary at the end of oblast' to denote the Russian character ь. --Peter Talk 02:33, 11 January 2008 (EST)
- I had a play with it, but best I could come up with was
''Penzenskaya oblast' '') which leaves an unwanted space thus: Penzenskaya oblast' ) ~ 203.144.143.4 02:43, 11 January 2008 (EST)
Could you take a look at the (...Vologodskaya oblast’) bit of WikiPedia:Vologda Oblast - is that acceptable? ~ 203.144.143.4 12:20, 11 January 2008 (EST)
[edit] Travel guides in Russian
Dear Peter, I have wrote many articles or made a significant contibution)in Russian Wikipedia (Budapest, Madrid, Barcelona, Florence). Now I started to write articles in Russian Wikitravel. To my opinion, its level is too low. I can contribue due to my experience.
The countries I visited are: Switzerland, UK, France, Spain, Czechia, Hungary, US, Italy. I can write also in English or Hebrew. See my Wikipedia page at [4]--Aklyuch 22:44, 14 January 2008 (EST)
Hi - I made a few edits to the entry for Morogoro, Tanzania, but they don't seem to show up. I looked at the history of the page and saw your userid. It looks like you're an experienced user of this site (I am not) so I thought I'd ask - did I do something wrong in trying to save the edits ? Do I just need to wait for someone to approve them ? I have many more edits for Morogoro, but I thought I'd wait until the first batch go through. Could you please reply at [deleted] ? Thanks. - Albert
Peter - Thanks for explaining. I'll continue to update the Morogoro site. My plan is to move everything from the REDOUBT site to WikiTravel - no sense in hoarding the data when there's a great site like this. Thanks. - Albert
[edit] traveler vs traveller
I thought "traveller" was already well established as the default for Wikitravel - see Main page, etc. ~ 203.144.143.8 22:49, 18 January 2008 (EST)
- Yeah, we've been schizophrenic on that because Evan for whatever reason grew up using the English spelling. Like I said, it's not something I care too much about—I'd rather see a policy that encourages spellings local to the destination, so I'm not a big supporter of the American-only rule. --Peter Talk 22:52, 18 January 2008 (EST)
- OK to continue standardising on "travell..." then? ~ 203.144.143.4 22:56, 18 January 2008 (EST)
- standardizing :=) --Wandering 23:18, 18 January 2008 (EST)
- No chance - if it's from one non-supporter of the American-only rule to another non-supporter of the American-only rule, then it's definitely with an s. ~ 203.144.143.4 23:23, 18 January 2008 (EST)
- Well, again this is just my view and it's not a policy, but for me the most important thing is the consistency within a single locale. What exactly constitutes a single locale is up for debate, of course—I would argue that any collection of articles that would conceivably wind up in a single book (were such a book to be written) should have a purely consistent spelling/punctuation format. So I would definitely oppose "traveller" changes to Chicago, for example, because there is a published guide that needs to maintain consistency in (American) spelling. All this is not really in line with policy, though. It might be useful to bring this discussion to Wikitravel talk:Spelling, which is a policy I think could anyway benefit from more discussion and review. --Peter Talk 00:19, 19 January 2008 (EST)
[edit] Sleep section header in region articles
Hi, Peter. I noticed that you "restored" a Sleep header to the Arizona article. I believe it is policy that region articles do not have a Sleep section. In my experience that is good policy as everyone wants their listing in the highest geographical level for better exposure, but leaves us sorting huge lists to lower levels where they belong. -- OldPine 07:43, 19 January 2008 (EST)
- No kidding! --Peter Talk 15:05, 19 January 2008 (EST)
If we're going to move the DC article, should we move it to Washington, D.C. and mind our commas? -- Sapphire • (Talk) • 17:24, 20 January 2008 (EST)
- Ah, good point, and thanks for catching me early! --Peter Talk 17:26, 20 January 2008 (EST)
[edit] Get in or Get out?
Peter, please tell me where to put the Khachmaz departing bus schedule?
To me, it seems it belongs in the "get out" section, but another user said it belongs in the "get in" space. Please advise.
Thanks,Starvinghog 01:24, 31 January 2008 (EST)
[edit] New user question
I am trying to add information about Norskedalen (where I work) to Wikitravel. Being new to this, I did create a user ID to disclose that the information comes from our non-profit rather than a traveler. I added to the 'See' section of Southwest Wisconsin (which is where I saw your name). I am not sure I did it right; the 'See' changed fonts and I didn't touch that, it has a 'link example' in blue at the end of the paragraph, and I wasn't sure if I should create a separate page for Norskedalen? I was just hoping you might give me a bit of guidance if you would be so kind. Thanks —The preceding comment was added by Svennorsk (talk • contribs) .
[edit] Chicago
Hi, thanks for the heads-up about the external links policy in Wikitravel, I'll be sure to follow it from now on. Please dump anything I added that may be inappropriate. Still, I hope the link to my Blues Brothers map might remain – I know of many fans of the movie who have used it as the basis of self-guided tours of the city, which is an interesting way to get off the beaten path. Best regards, Kevin Forsyth 11:14, 15 February 2008 (EST)
[edit] Typo patrol
'Bridgeport' has a typo in the map title here. Gorilla Jones 15:13, 18 February 2008 (EST)
- Ack! Should now be fixed. --Peter Talk 15:25, 18 February 2008 (EST)
[edit] Thanks
Thanks for the communication to the guy starting hotel articles. I though I did that, but I guess it got lost in the database problems. OldPine 18:08, 22 February 2008 (EST)
[edit] Thanks!
For the offer of help. I will no doubt take you up on it! And thanks, too, for all your great contributions to the site! (and for your patience with the tech issues that are being worked on).JuCo 18:38, 22 February 2008 (EST)
[edit] Thanks
Thanks for the compliment on the San Diego overview map! Course, I got the idea from seeing one on the Chicago page... PerryPlanet 20:04, 23 February 2008 (EST)
[edit] Hello!
Why do you want to delete the page of båtOpplevelse AS?
Did I do anything wrong? I am new to Wikipedia and try to follow the rules. —The preceding comment was added by Runhild (talk • contribs) .
- Hi, I left you a message on your talk page. First, this is not Wikipedia, this is Wikitravel. Second, we basically only write articles about travel regions and cities/towns. Please see Wikitravel:What is an article? for more information. --Peter Talk 18:09, 24 February 2008 (EST)
[edit] Thanks
Peter - thanks. I was starting to plan my annual vacation and stumbled on Wikitravel. It seems to be a worthwhile effort, and I do a little traveling that might be of use to the site. Brhumphreys 23:37, 24 February 2008 (EST)
[edit] heya peter i stand corrected
you were right obama has a hotel mccain doesn--71.254.108.151 20:47, 26 February 2008 (EST)t hope your not mad but i did add southern pines has a inn.
Did you only pick up your Georgian in Georgia or did you learn it from other means? I'm curious, because I'd like to pick it up for fun.
If you don't mind me asking, what brings you to Toledo? I've been there once around this time of the year and if I'm not mistaken, it's the worst place to be on Earth. -- Sapphire • (Talk) • 13:33, 3 March 2008 (EST)
- Well, count me in on the vote for Ohio. I'm in Cincinnati and wished I could do campaigning, but without a car that's a tad difficult. I actually got to see/hear Obama at the University of Cincinnati a week or so ago. I'm glad that I got to go to that. -- Sapphire • (Talk) • 14:10, 3 March 2008 (EST)
[edit] Texas subdivisions
Hi there! Since you've been there recently, I'd appreciate any commentary or contributions you might have on the recent work I'm doing to do subdivide the Texas Panhandle into more digestible-sized chunks. Also, I'll check out the new photo submission as soon as I'm not at a work computer that blocks Flickr. Texugo 01:26, 6 March 2008 (EST)

So, the bears at Cabela's did not eat you? 2old 10:06, 6 March 2008 (EST)
[edit] Maryland map
Thanks a bunch for the map! I'm really excited to have that sort of quality content in Maryland. One question, though: shouldn't Talbot County be in the Eastern Shore? That's where it was in the Maryland tourism site I took the regions from. --Jonboy 19:29, 6 March 2008 (EST)
- Yes! Cecil County. Good thing I don't have to re-take my 4th grade Maryland geography test. (Which I thought was ridiculous, since I had no intention of living here as an adult. Hah!) I'm happy to help out as much as I can. I'm spending the whole of March here (first month w/o travel in 3 years), so I'd be happy to pitch in with any Maryland/Mid-Atlantic projects. --Jonboy 20:56, 6 March 2008 (EST)
I realize this is a little picky, but shouldn't DC be shaded the same not-Maryland color as the rest of the not-Maryland part of the map? Until we have retrocession, it's probably a little less confusing that way. --Jonboy 12:22, 14 March 2008 (EDT)
- Looks good, although I can't figure out how to get it to re-load from cache, so I had to go onto shared to look at it. Last December, I explained to a cab driver in Singapore that I was from just outside the capital, and he thought I was from New York. --Jonboy 13:36, 14 March 2008 (EDT)
[edit] Palo Duro Canyon photo
Hey, would you be willing to put the photo of the Lighthouse formation into the article for Palo Duro Canyon? Texugo 01:01, 7 March 2008 (EST)
No hoopla, but the quest begun last May is complete — we made Chicago a star. A moment of shared triumph, then... Gorilla Jones 00:16, 8 March 2008 (EST)
[edit] WorldFlicks external linking
Sorry, I just wanted some discussion on several pages on linking to WorldFlicks pages. I think it fits with the external linking policy, I don't see any point where it doesnt fit. I posted in on 10 popular places to get some good discussion... Where should be the best place to run this discussion?
RonaldR 16:15, 9 March 2008 (EDT)
I'm a pain-in-the-ass about license issues, but could I ask that you waive the requirement for me to attribute you for this version of the Maryland expedition? I'd like to copy this over to other language versions and on en: too, but I'd likely forget to continually attribute you. -- Sapphire • (Talk) • 19:25, 11 March 2008 (EDT)
- Absolutely, consider it licensed as CC ShareAlike. The attribution requirement can be an unnecessary little thorn sometimes... --Peter Talk 19:31, 11 March 2008 (EDT)

[edit] Ireland Maps
Peter, I think I've messed up the Ireland maps (serves me right for messing with something I know nothing about!) I was trying to change the spelling of two of the towns shown on the road map, changing Moneghan to Monaghan and Carrick on Shannon to Carrick-on-Shannon. Is it something you can fix up easily, or have I made a complete mess of it!??! Sorry. --The.Q(t)(c) 10:45, 14 March 2008 (EDT)
[edit] borders for Rome districts
Hi, Peter. I am about to sort out some part of listings in Rome; before I start, just to make sure: do you think there are high chances that you can help with definition of district borders for Rome in the nearest weeks? If so, I will postpone my edits until there some consensus on districts appear; otherwise I can plunge forward immediately with a dozen or two of moves that are clear even for a present district structure. What do you think? --DenisYurkin 04:09, 15 March 2008 (EDT)
- Yes, I can definitely help! My attention is, as always, divided between different things, but don't wait on my account—I'll join the effort. --Peter Talk 11:17, 15 March 2008 (EDT)
