The Wikitravel Web site is now owned by an American company called Internet Brands, Inc. (IB) which operates a number of consumer information sites. "Wikitravel" is a trademark of Internet Brands. Internet Brands also owns World66, another world-wide wiki travel guide with very similar goals and the same license as Wikitravel. IB intends to eventually integrate the two sites, smoothing out the overlaps and emphasizing the strengths.
IB employs Evan as a part-time consultant. They own the wikitravel.org, .com and .net domains, as well as trademark and other rights for the name "Wikitravel". The company will support development of Wikitravel's software -- especially adapting MediaWiki for travel-oriented contributions. They also pay for the hardware and bandwidth for the site. The current plan for revenue is at some point to add labelled, unobtrusive, on-site advertisements to the Wikitravel Web site.
In their original press release, IB said they think of Wikitravel community as the site's main strength. They expect the community to take the lead in any decision-making about site policy, editorial guidelines, etc. as well as software enhancements. They're insistent on a "church-and-state" separation of advertisements and content, and they note that the value of the site is principally in the integrity and objective consensus reflected in the wiki-edited guides.
